about

"Piece with gaps for each other" is a performance and a record album. It traces a course from phenomenological to fantastical, material to theatrical, and back.

The album features a transparent blue vinyl with two tracks by the Kamakura-based sound artist Kohji Setoh — along with lush photography by Anja Hitzenberger and Ryosuke Kikuchi; the performance score; and artist texts by Setoh and the performance’s co-creators, the Tulum-based artist Martin Lanz Landazuri and the New York City-based choreographer Ursula Eagly.

Track 01 is a polyrhythmic percussion composition for The Chocolate Factory’s architecture. All sounds were recorded by striking various parts of the building in performance on April 1, 2017.

Track 02 fishes the depths for bass, then lifts off and disintigrates somewhere in the Milky Way. It is made from a single sound sample, an audio fragment from a music piece released by Cero Records, the label belonging to the Mexican composer Andres de Robina, who collaborated on Piece with gaps for each other’s Mexico City performances.

Please note that the record is designed to be played at 45 RPM.

Setoh, Lanz Landazuri, and Eagly recreate "Piece with gaps for each other" together with different artists in each of the locations where it is performed. The work was commissioned by The Chocolate Factory in New York City, and performances have take place at Tokeiji Temple in Kamakura in September 2016, The Chocolate Factory in New York City in March 2017, and at Laboratorio Arte Alameda in Mexico City in August 2018.

"Piece with gaps for each other" は、「現象からファンタジーへ」「物質性から劇場性を立ち上げる」という作品コンセプトで、鎌倉を拠点に活動するサウンドアーティスト瀬藤康嗣、メキシコ・トゥルムを拠点に活動するアーティストMartin Lanz Landazuri 、ニューヨークを拠点に活動する演出家Ursula Eaglyの3人による共同制作で作られた作品です。

- Anja Hitzenberger

"Piece with gaps for each other" は3人のそれぞれの本拠地で上演され、その場所ごとにローカルのアーティストも参加して再制作されています。
